Cicely Saunders Institute
Description
The Cicely Saunders Institute is the first purpose-built institute for research into palliative care and rehabilitation. It opened in May 2010 as the result of a partnership between King’s College London and the charity Cicely Saunders International. The Institute brings together academics, healthcare professionals, community organisations, patients and families in one centre and acts as the hub for a network of international research. We aim to pioneer the very best in palliative care and rehabilitation by integrating cutting-edge research, skilled multi-professional care, and innovation in engagement and education.
Public involvement in research
Palliative care and Rehabilitation put both patients and their families at the heart of care, and we want the work of the Cicely Saunders Institute to reflect this by involving patients, carers and the public at every stage of our research. Our patient and public representatives are involved in a number ways including; attending bi-annual workshops to learn from and provide feedback to researchers; being part of research project advisory groups, and participating in our online forum for patient and public involvement. Across this different activities they providing critical feedback on research proposals and protocols; aid interpretation of findings, support ethics applications, help disseminate our work; and offer advice on how best to involve patients, family, carers’ and public in the work we do.
